Unstable weather in Vallelunga - Felix goes ninth in free practice

FIA Formula 3 European Championship | Round 9
Venue:
Vallelunga (Italy) | Date: 12 October 2013 | Weather: Wet, but drying

By Mattias Persson

Felix and the rest of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship fraternity were treated to a wet but drying track as free practice got the penultimate round of the season officially underway at Vallelunga on Saturday morning.

Persistent overnight rain saw running commence on a wet circuit, which then gradually dried up throughout the two 30-minute sessions. The teams spent the first half-an-hour effectively conducting a number of installation laps, with action then stepping up - at least a bit - as conditions improved over the final half of practice.

Conditions, however, remained far from ideal, with Alex Lynn's chart-topping best of 1m39.457s some ten seconds off the dry pace seen in yesterday's test outing. Felix eventually took ninth, 1.1s adrift of Lynn, and just a few hundredths of a second behind championship rival Raffaele Marciello (who wound up eighth).

Felix completed less laps than any other driver in the top ten; 11. The top three, for reference, all toured the Italian venue 16 times.

The weather continues to be a hot topic in the Vallelunga paddock, with grey clouds lingering above the circuit perimeters with little more than an hour to go before the all-important qualifying sessions get underway.

QUOTE | FELIX

"We did very limited running in the first half of practice - and not a lot more in the second session - but I think we are fairly OK. Following the test yesterday, we did plan on trying out a couple of things this morning that we weren't able to do because of the weather, and it now remains to be seen what conditions we'll have in qualifying. Rain or dry, we will do everything we can to challenge as close to the front as possible."
