Emphatic recovery sees Felix salvage Race 1 points

FIA Formula 3 European Championship | Round 9
Vallelunga (Italy) | Date: 12 October 2013 | Weather: Sunny

By Mattias Persson

Felix hauled himself from 27th and last to tenth place by the chequered flag in the opening race of the weekend at Vallelunga, as he salvaged two potentially crucial points on a circuit notorious for its lack of overtaking opportunities.

Following the dismal outcome of qualifying earlier today - when he was forced to sit out much of the action due to a broken suspension - Felix began the race from dead last; P27.

After just one lap, however, he was running 20th, and then kept up the rate of progression throughout the remainder of the event to finally - to most people's chock - make it all the way into the points.

On his way up the field, Felix produced a series of very dedicated overtaking moves, including passing several of his rivals around the outside.

Felix eventually came home tenth, but scores points for ninth due to Russian Daniil Kvyat's status as a guest driver. The race was won by Raffaele Marciello on home soil.

Felix will have to start tomorrow's Race 2 from last once again - another repercussion of his qualifying woes.

"That was a fun race - great to be able to fight back like that! Considering where we started, and how difficult it normally is to overtake around here, we must definitely be happy with what we've just achieved. It was probably one of my better races, and although it will be difficult to do it all again tomorrow, we've at least proved that it's possible. I'm really looking forward to giving it another go!"
