Felix upsets Carlin stranglehold in Zandvoort free practice

FIA Formula 3 European Championship | Round 8
Zandvoort (the Netherlands) | Date: 27 September 2013 | Weather: Warm and sunny

By Mattias Persson

Felix denied the Carlin squad a 1-2-3 lock-out in Friday free practice at Zandvoort, backing up a pace-setting effort in the first part of the session by going third fastest overall as the FIA Formula 3 European Championship returned to life following a six-week hiatus.

Having made the history books by claiming a second Masters of F3 win at the Dutch venue earlier in the year, Felix wasted no time in showing his intentions ahead of a very important weekend in terms of the championship showdown. Felix completed the opening 40 minutes of practice on top of the timesheets, one tenth ahead of Red Bull protégé Daniil Kvyat (Carlin), with title rival Raffaele Marciello (Prema Powerteam) taking fifth.

Once the session was resumed following a short five-minute break, Felix put in another competitive showing, eventually ending up third behind Carlin duo Kvyat and recently-crowned British F3 champion Jordan King. In doing so, he denied the British outfit - famous for their one-lap pace - a 1-2-3, with Harry Tincknell taking fourth an odd tenth adrift of Felix.

Marciello, meanwhile, wound up 11th, while Michael Lewis emerged as the second-fastest Mücke Motorsport man in 17th.

Next up today are the all-important qualifying sessions.

"A good start to the weekend. The first session went particularly well - it's always nice to top the sheets - but the second one was more of a compromise with a lot of yellow flags and traffic. I basically got two or three real laps in, so I think there was more to find. We completed our programme, the car felt strong throughout, and we should be in a good position for qualifying. It's just great to be back at this circuit again."
