Felix wins again to set up ultra-dramatic title climax

FIA Formula 3 European Championship | Round 8
Venue:
Zandvoort (the Netherlands) | Date: 29 September 2013 | Weather: Sunny, windy

By Mattias Persson

Felix backed up his victory of yesterday with another win at Zandvoort this morning, controlling the final race of the weekend from start to finish as title rival Raffaele Marciello crashed out in the closing stages to set up an ultra-dramatic climax to the title chase.

Starting from his second pole position of the weekend, Felix grabbed the lead from the word go and went on to control the race throughout - holding off Jordan King over a final one-lap sprint to the finish following a late-race safety car period.

While the safety car had little impact on the outcome of the race itself, the reason for its deployment was more significant - as Marciello crashed out at the fast Masters Bocht with just four laps to go. With the Italian scoring zero points for the second race in succession, Felix has now brought the gap down to just 9.5 points in the fight for the title - setting up a highly dramatic conclusion to the season.

Felix again posted the fastest lap of the race.

QUOTE | FELIX

"An absolutely incredible weekend; Zandvoort certainly is the place for me! I did not expect to go away from here less than ten points adrift of the championship lead, and the outcome of this weekend has put us firmly back in the title fight once more. We've scored the maximum 75 points on offer, won two out of three races, topped qualifying and set two fastest laps and a new lap record - it certainly could have been a lot worse!

"Big, big thanks to the entire team at Mücke Motorsport for giving me such a great car this weekend. We now have to redirect our focus towards the final two rounds of the season, and we have to work as hard as we humanly can to try and maintain this form in Italy and Germany."
